Annual Weeds

Fleabane, Thistles, Cobblers Pegs, Fat Hen, Mustard, Ricardia

Fleabane, black solanum, thistles, cobblers pegs, fat hen, indian mustard, canola, hemlock and ricardia are all annual pasture and lawn weeds. They all appear in late winter / early spring and form thick cover by the end of October.

Control is very easy. All these weeds respond extremely well to dicamba/mcpa which has the advantage of not affecting any grass underneath.

Inkweed, Pattersons Curse, Paddy's Lucerne, Stinking Roger, Winter Cherry, Noogoora Burr

Inkweed, black solanum, pattersons curse, paddys lucerne, and stinking roger are also annual weeds that appear in early spring. The primary control is dicamba/mcpa but they often need more than one dose to fully disappear. Winter cherry is reisistant to dicamba but is controllable with metsulfuron.

Datura (Datura stramonium)

Picture
Daturas are an annual weed that grow to around 1 metre tall. They most commonly grow in full sun positions on recently cleared land. They can be identified by their blue-green, oak leaf shaped leaves and burgundy red stems.

Daturas flower in spring and summer, producing white to purple trumpet-shaped flowers near the top of the plant. By late summer, the seed pods start to appear. They are easily recognisable by their spiky round appearance.
Removal:
Hand removal. Bag up any ripe seed pods.
Herbicide removal is dicamba/mcpa.

Parramatta Grass & Tussock

Giant Parramatta Grass, regular Parramatta Grass and Tussock are all pasture weeds that are unpalatable and undigestable by livestock. They take over paddocks very quickly and spread very easily.

Control is ideally with flupropanate although spot spraying the core with glyphosate 50:1 is very effective as is wick wiping with a towed wick wiping rig. Best results are to spray in early spring and then again in late summer.

Buttercups

Buttercups grow in semi shaded to full sun areas along creeks and in gullies. They are an especially common environmental weed in the highlands. The main problem is that the smother all native ground cover that would otherwise occur.

Control is with dicamba/mcpa. This can be done at any time of year although early spring is ideal.
